Empowering safety leaders at ARC

At ARC, safety is always our #1 priority. Whether we are constructing our newest facility, completing annual turnaround activities, or maintaining regular operations – our goal is to ensure ‘Zero Harm’ to our employees, contractors, and the communities where we operate.

Through open communication, trust, and respect, we strive to create an environment where employees and contractors feel supported and empowered to do their best work, safely. Our people-centric approach is underscored by our company culture of caring and high-performance.

Proactive approach for frontline safety leadership

Creating an environment where safety is top-of-mind requires more than just policies and procedures, it takes strong safety leadership from every person that shows up to work. By keeping our teams engaged, informed, and empowered to protect themselves and others, ARC has created a strong safety culture to address potential hazards and keep each other safe.

Our ‘Together-Preventing Harm’ safety strategy encourages top-tier safety performance by reinforcing the importance of caring for each other, committing to safe work practices, collaborating across teams, and continuously improving our systems, teams, and leaders.

Annual Safety Workshops

To ensure our teams are informed and aligned with our approach to safety, we hold annual safety workshops that help us to engage our frontline leaders, focus their attention on the conditions and behaviours that create safer workplaces, and empower them to be a part of improving safety across our business.

This year, more than 250 ARC employees and consultants gathered at our field offices in Grande Prairie, AB and Dawson Creek, BC to hear from our senior leaders, learn about how we are advancing our ‘Together-Preventing Harm’ strategy and engage in discussions around important safety topics that impact each of our teams.

We welcomed prominent motivational safety speakers David Sarkus and Dan Comiskey who delivered thought-provoking presentations about “Leading from Your Heart” and “You Can Count on Me” that helped to connect our desire to prevent harm and build capacity in each other, with the four tenets of our ‘Together-Preventing Harm’ strategy – care, commit, collaborate, and improve.

Participants engaged in multidisciplinary table discussions focused on improving safety across the business and strengthening our approach in 2024. Feedback from these sessions is an essential part of our continuous improvement approach that enables us to learn, share and advance our safety culture across ARC.

Employee Perspectives

“ARC truly does put safety above all else. Our Together-Preventing Harm journey started last year when we brought together operations and safety teams to discuss where we want to go as an organization with regards to safety systems and processes. As a team we set goals, objectives, and a deadline. One year later, we gathered together to review our performance and identify where we want to go next. It’s great to work for an organization that holds true to its values and allows actions to speak louder than words.”

“It was great to get all the operations supervisors, foremen, and other leaders together in a room to collaborate on how to make sure we’re promoting attitudes that support our culture of caring. I appreciate that ARC is always evolving its approach to safety and always trying to improve. We’ve got good buy-in from our leaders and we’re making good progress. At the end of the day, we want to make sure that everyone is looking out for each other, and these sessions really reinforced that we are not under pressure to get things done by a deadline, our focus is on safety and taking the time to do things properly.”

“We take a people-first approach to safety at ARC, and our Together-Preventing Harm strategy ensures we have strong systems, trained and empowered teams and visible and accountable safety leadership as an enabler. Everyone at ARC owns safety and our annual workshop provides a forum to leverage our collective experience and identify opportunities to continually improve together. Ensuring the very people that execute our work on the frontline inform our approach to advancing safety is key to our success as an organization in preventing harm.”

Thank you to our people and service providers for your continued focus and commitment to ensuring safety is always our #1 priority.
