Senior Indigenous Relations Advisor

We are currently seeking a Senior Indigenous Relations Advisor for a position on our Surface Land & Indigenous Relations team.  The successful candidate will have broad based knowledge of the oil and gas industry as well as extensive working knowledge of all Indigenous relations matters in Western Canada. This exciting full-time, permanent position is based in Calgary and reports to the Manager, Surface Land & Indigenous Relations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the ongoing development and implementation of ARC’s Indigenous Relations Strategy;
  • Develop successful relationships through meaningful engagement with local indigenous communities and act as the primary point of contact;
  • Assist ARC with setting and achieving ESG goals and targets related to Indigenous employment, engagement, procurement etc.;
  • Liaise with operations and supply chain in developing procurement strategies for engaging Indigenous suppliers and subcontractors, and labour force;
  • Develops long-term Indigenous partnerships and identify, recommend, and lead opportunities for strategic alliances;
  • Lead business development opportunities with Indigenous businesses and communities. Develop processes internally to increase the number and improve the quality of the contracts ARC has with Indigenous businesses;
  • Advise leadership team on strategic Indigenous engagement and facilitate consultation for projects;
  • Negotiate Agreements with communities on behalf of ARC;
  • Regulatory responsibilities: responsible for Indigenous consultation on ARC’s corporate plans, tracking and reporting on consultations. Work closely with surface land team on all projects;
  • Indigenous contact for emergency management/incidents;
  • Continually review and implement the Indigenous Policy and Standards at ARC, and report activities and achievements to ARC Leadership;
  • Promoting awareness of our corporate social responsibility to our employees and coordinating wide cultural awareness training with HR.


The ideal candidates will possess the following key attributes:

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience related to Indigenous Relationships, agreements, consultation, and business development;
  • Post-Secondary degree is preferred but not required;
  • Exemplary relationship buildings skills and the ability to communicate and negotiate with sophistication;
  • Strong understanding and experience with the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action and regulatory frameworks pertaining to Indigenous peoples;
  • Strong cultural business awareness working with Indigenous communities and the ability to collaborate effectively with community leaders to build lasting relationships;
  • Experience and comprehensive understanding of regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions for First Nations and Metis Consultation;
  • Motivated team player with a passion for working with Indigenous communities;
  • Strong understanding and awareness of Indigenous cultures and communities from a historical and current perspective;
  • Desire to promote diversity and the creation/strengthening of a culture of inclusion and excellence is essential;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to coach and educate leadership steam on strategy development and program implementation issues;
  • Exceptional presentation and writing skills;
  • Proven ability to influence and relationship build with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Superior business acumen and proven ability to recognize business opportunities and how they relate to ARC’s overall performance;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to the field as required (monthly and as needed);
  • Valid driver’s license.
