ARC is committed to green house gas (GHG) reductions. Since 1997 ARC has been registered with the Canadian GHG Challenge Registry©, operated by CSA Climate Change, GHG Registries (formerly VCR Inc.) and submitted our first action report in 1999. Since our inception, ARC has worked steadily to reduce green house gas emissions. ARC has advanced in their Champion level reporting status to the highest recognized level of Gold with the 2000, 2003, and 2004 report submissions while attaining a Silver in 2001 and a Bronze in 1999. ARC has created a leadership culture that pervades all aspects of business including environmental management.Similarly, ARC Energy Trust has received community awards such as the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group (SPOG) award for building long-term relationships based on mutual trust, honesty and respect. Our commitment to the environment is predicated on key principles and the following details will highlight specific accomplishments that illustrate pro-active efforts in environmental management.
As an intermediate sized oil and gas producer, based on approximately 62,800 boe/d with operations in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba ARC is one of largest publicly traded oil and gas producers in Canada. ARC displays an unwavering commitment to the environment and takes pride in knowing that the leadership policies developed in the past with the foundation of a small company are the backbone of the intermediate company today. We believe that we conduct our business in three specific environments. The natural environment consists of air, land, water and wildlife. The community environment is the general public, local businesses, associations and government agencies. The third is our corporate environment, which relates to the culture that is promoted within the company.
ARC demonstrates leadership in all of these areas with written policies setting out core values and clear environmental policies and procedures. It is an expectation that management and staff at every level are committed to the protection of the environment. A key objective of ARC’s environmental policies has been to ensure that business is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. We promote environmental awareness in the community and at work. Our commitment is backed financially by a "reclamation fund" where ARC sets aside capital annually to ensure funds are available to address current and future liabilities. The balance of this fund, as at December 31, 2005 stands at $23.5 million with annual contributions of $6 million net of actual expenditures.
In conducting its operations, ARC undertakes many initiatives to ensure that the impact on the environment is negated or negligible. In our drilling and construction activities we have a minimal disturbance policy. This means that all activity must be kept to a minimum and standard roads and leases are used whenever possible. This ensures natural areas such as native prairie, watersheds and other wilderness areas are preserved and historical significance maintained.ARC also maintains an active abandonment and reclamation program. These involve industrial sites being turned back to the natural state prior to disturbance. Also, in completing our environmental work we actively use soil treatment facilities rather than land farming techniques or landfills. This allows us to return and use native soils during our work.
